My 6 A.M. Thought

I've been battling a crazy sore throat since Wednesday evening. The pain intensity goes from 7 or 8 (with pain reliever and lots of fluids) to 10 (like when I wake up in the middle of the night after the pain reliever has worn off. I haven't slept through an entire night since it arrived, but tonight I made it to 6 A.M. Don't worry. I've been monitoring it daily for the white strep spots. I hope it gets better soon...

But let's get to my thought...

(Other than the current state of my throat) one of the things that makes me cringe is when a teacher has bad grammar.

Because I am a teacher, I feel like I can say this. I expect there to be a goof every now and then. We are human, after all, but it shouldn't be chronic. At least 2 or 3 teachers I know have grammar issues where they obviously don't know the difference between some of those early elementary words like 'our' and 'are'. 'To' and 'too' are also really common mess-ups I see.

I might even feel so passionately about it as to say that it should be a requirement for entering the education field. Or becoming any sort of 'professional'. How can you teach young minds to write if you, yourself, can't use English correctly?

Ok, I just stepped down from my soap box before it got too crazy.

I remember when I was younger one of my goals was to be a writer and publish at least one book. I used to have a purple folder where I would keep my started and finished stories. (Actually I still have it in a box somewhere.)

At some point I even wrote a fairy tale-like chapter book (with a princess, a prince, and a dragon) on some old computer long since dead. I retyped it later on another old computer, also no longer running. I think I have it saved on an old-school disc somewhere.

I even took a creative writing/book-making class through the Newton Rec center one summer.

Who knows. I'm still young (not even 30 yet) so maybe that goal will still be fulfilled at some point. I still have it in my head that I probably won't be a teacher forever, so there is room for much more.

I had hoped to get a few more hours of sleep. Hopefully this doesn't make me too sleepy to pay attention in church.

Good morning,
Sarah
